CGNU plans to change its name to Aviva after posting a large rise in full-year operating profits.

It says Aviva reflects the international nature of the newly integrated business.

For commercial reasons, certain strong brands - such as Norwich Union in Britain - will be retained with the endorsement 'an Aviva company'.

Operating profit for 2001 was up 41 per cent to £2 billion sterling.

The long-term savings business achieved record sales, and the company's worldwide new business sales were £15 billion.

Chief executive Mr Richard Harvey says: "This is a strong set of results. Our life businesses have outperformed in our major markets in the UK and Europe through organic development, acquisitions, partnerships and new ventures that extend our distribution capabilities.

"In general insurance, we have delivered a significant improvement in results through lower weather-related claims and a focused approach to our realigned small commercial and personal lines portfolio."

CGNU has also unveiled plans to cut its 2002 dividend to 23p per share. It wants to conserve cash to invest in its growing European life business.

The total pay-out covering last year is held at 38p a share.
