The recent increase in road traffic deaths and serious injuries has been discussed by Cabinet but no new proposal-shave emerged. Following yesterday's Cabinet meeting, a Government statement called on all road users to keep their speed within legal limits and to be mindful of all aspects of road safety.

A spokesman said the Government was pressing ahead in implementing its road safety strategy.

The Minister for the Environment, Mr Dempsey, briefed colleagues on this week's multiple fatalities in Co Wicklow. According to a Government statement issued afterwards, the road safety strategy, launched in July, would be implemented in all its elements as quickly as possible.

The strategy aimed to cut road accidents by 20 per cent within five years. Speed, alcohol intake and neglect in wearing seat belts are the three main reasons for traffic deaths and injuries.
