A plan to build apartments on a site next to a bird sanctuary in Co Dublin has been rejected by An Bord Pleanala.

Ashcastle Developments Ltd had sought approval for 53 apartments on the edge of Booterstown Marsh, near Booterstown DART station.

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and Dublin City Council granted planning permission for the development at the end of May. The decision was appealed by local residents, who claimed the buildings would endanger the fragile ecology of Booterstown Marsh, a protected area.

An Bord Pleanala said the scheme would be in contravention of the open space and recreational amenity zoning of the site and that the proposed development would be premature pending a decision on a route for the Eastern bypass motorway.
