THERE was a seminar in Moyne College, Ballina, recently to discuss establishing a Catholic university in Mayo. The committee, under the chairmanship of Bishop Thomas Finegan, was told that a site existed at the Beleek estate, on the outskirts of the town and that an architect from Cracow was lined up. Discussion took place on how a profile for the project could be established and funds raised. At this stage a voice from the back of the hall announced, in an American accent, that God would ensure that resources were made available. Indeed, the man said, £30 million could be obtained if a lotto ticket was purchased in Knock. There was little laughter.
