The Bishop of Cork and Ross, Dr John Buckley, yesterday appealed to the public to help gardai investigating the rape of an eight-year-old girl in Cork city last weekend.

A spokesman for Dr Buckley said the bishop appreciated that parents were fearful for their children following the assault in the Dillon's Cross area on April 25th. The only way to end that anxiety was to bring the culprit to justice.

The appeal comes after priests at weekend Masses in the city highlighted Garda appeals to anyone who may be able to assist them to contact them in confidence at McCurtain Street Station on 021-503337.

Meanwhile, gardai are continuing their investigation into the attack and have called to some 450 houses in the St Luke's area, near where the assault took place.
