At least 18 gunmen have been killed in clashes after drug gangs tried to blockade army bases in northern Mexico, military officials said today.

The Mexican army said only one soldier was wounded in the fighting as dozens of attackers targeted garrisons in the border states of Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon.

General Edgar Luis Villegas said gunmen staged seven separate attacks on the army on Tuesday, including three blockades. He said the attacks were “desperate reactions by criminal gangs to the progress being made by federal authorities” against Mexico’s drug cartels.
