A Sandymount house that has been in the same family since it was built, has plenty of space to extend or to let the garden grow, writes ORNA MULCAHY
TIMES WERE not particularly flush in the 1930s when this detached house was built off Sandymount Avenue in Dublin 4. The large, almost square-walled garden at the back of the house, was probably originally admired for its potential as a cabbage patch, rather than as an outdoor living space, and that may be its appeal again today as more and more homeowners decide to grow their own.
With good-sized gardens front and back, and plenty of off-street parking, number 20 Wilfield Park is asking €950,000 through Lisney. The price seems strong, given that the house needs a good deal of money spent on it. However, it’s in a prime location, with the Dart on its door step and within easy reach of good schools and shops.
There’s also the fact that number 20 has been in the same family since it was built, and so while there is work to be done, it has a lovely old-world feel to it and most of its original features are intact.
Called Cuilin, it’s a double-fronted house that is wide rather than deep, with around 137 sq m (1,467 sq ft) of living space and an integrated garage ready to be converted and extended.
The entrance hall, with its distinctive panelled walls, leads on one side to a drawingroom that runs from front to back of the house with a wide bow window to the front and French doors to the back garden. On the other side of the hall is a family room with an art deco-style fireplace.
There’s a spacious cloakroom and a rear lobby that did service as a kitchen, with the remaining ground-floor space given over to a spacious breakfastroom with an oak fireplace.
The first floor has three good-sized double bedrooms, one of which is ensuite. There is also a family bathroom and a further single bedroom.
One of the bedrooms has a door leading into a quaint attic room with its own window to the front and this could be converted to an ensuite bathroom, or alternatively would make a cute child’s bedroom or study.
