Hair raising

It’s scissors at the ready for the European Championships of Hair and Beauty, which is being held in the RDS over the next two days. It’s the first time the event has been held here, and promises to be great fun, with more than 400 contestants from 20 countries vying to stand out with their creations. The weird and the wonderful will be there in force, (think Eurovision and substitute the words hair and beauty for song and you’ll get the idea). I predict a visual overload.

There will also be input from local experts, such as Ken Boylan, who will be advising on a more street-friendly take on the new trends. The hairstyle pictured is by Louise Jordan of MOHH salon in Galway, who will be competing as part of the Irish team.

Get glowing

So there I was, giving my opinion on a dress my sister was trying on in Covet in the Powerscourt Centre. Invited to a black-tie event, she was taking the sensible option of hiring a dress and had found a single-shouldered deep gold silk number. After discussing the jewellery (earrings, no necklace, we concluded) the subject of skin was next. Should she apply a tan before the big night? As it was, her skin looked just right – a pale hint of even colour that looked incredibly natural. Dove Summer Glow (€6.99) applied every second day was responsible for the effect.

For a little evening sheen, I advised a dusting of Sunshimmer’s Compact Powder (€7.25). This range has been around forever and offers a choice of shades and finishes in different formulas, including the original instant tan make-up, which is transfer free, and unbeatable value for money.

Something for nothing

This glamorous gift-with-purchase cosmetic case will be on Lancôme counters from June 1st. Designed by Alice Temperley, it features a pattern of printed lace in the signature rose pattern of the brand. It is yours with two purchases, one being skin care.

Electrify your nails

The big fashion story this summer is colour blocking – strong, look-at-me primaries that suit a confident dresser. You can hit the trend without the visual explosion by investing in a vivid nail shade – a halfway house shade is old lady territory. Go for clean tones without any milkiness. This neon orange shade by Dior gets it right on the button, and comes as part of a duo that includes a sealing topcoat. As it’s such a strong statement, it will complement any colour you might be wearing, but I especially love it with this summer’s other essential, the relaxed denim shirt. Dior Vernis duo in Aloha (€30), is widely available.

Make the switch

A change of formula can work wonders for looking fresh-faced during summer, and switching from powder to cream blush is a case in point. Cream formulas are easier to blend and add a natural sheen to cheeks. This flattering peach shade is a winner. It has a whipped cream formula with 30 per cent moisturiser, for an elegant flush of colour. Maybelline’s Dream Touch costs €10.79.
