Let the sharp intakes of breath, fuming and chortling begin in earnest. The 10 acts and albums shortlisted for the Choice Music Prize for Irish Album of 2014 are as follows (in alphabetical order):
Aphex Twin "Syro" (Warp)
Delorentos "Night Becomes Light" (Universal Ireland)
The Gloaming "The Gloaming" (Real World)
Hozier "Hozier" (Rubyworks/Universal)
James Vincent McMorrow "Post Tropical" (Faction)
Sinead O'Connor "I'm Not Bossy, I'm The Boss" (Nettwerk)
Damien Rice "My Favourite Faded Fantasy" (Warner Music)
The Riptide Movement "Getting Through" (Universal Ireland)
U2 "Songs of Innocence" (Island)
We Cut Corners "Think Nothing" (Delphi)
So who selected that lot? The lads and lasses who selected that bunch of lovely coconuts are as follows (again, in alphabetical order):
Stuart Bailie (BCC Radio Ulster)
Stephen Byrne (RTE TV)
Mark Carry (Fractured Air)
Demelza De Burca (The Irish Mirror)
Ian Dempsey (Today FM)
Siobhan Kane (The Irish Times)
Philip King (Other Voices, RTE Radio One)
Ian Lamont (Totally Dublin)
Mark McCabe (2FM)
Dave MacCardle (Red FM)
Richie McCormack (The Insider, Irish Independent)
Olaf Tyaransen (Hot Press)
The details: the winning album will be selected by the judging panel at the Choice Music Prize live event at Vicar St, Dublin on Thursday March 5. Details of the live show to be announced, but tickets go on sale from Friday at €24 (plus Ticketmaster Pro-Choice fees) a pop.
The snap reaction: Aphex Twin is definitely Irish, right? Sad to see that the judges had no love for the Godknows + mynameisjOhn album and went with some awful tosh instead. ROFLOL at the U2 inclusion. The Gloaming or James Vincent McMorrow to win, Damien Rice as the outside bet and a strong sinking feeling that that bunch of judges are collectively likely to go for Hozier.
