These days it all seems to be about sisters doing it for themselves, what with UK trio The Staves and now Sweden's First Aid Kit. While the Stavely siblings channel a prim but charming range of classic UK and US folk performers (from Joni Mitchell and Carole King to Nick Drake and Vashti Bunyan), Johanna and Klara Söderberg pray at the altar of acts ranging from Fleet Foxes to Emmylou Harris. The effect, as noted on their 2010 debut album, The Big Black & the Blue, and this year's The Lion's Roar, is utterly beguiling. The Lion's Roar, in particular, has made more than several thousand people sit up and take notice, and has travelled well beyond the confines of Söderberg's native country, denting the UK, Australian and Canadian album charts.
And then there are the Söderberg voices: unaffected indie-country sweetness encased in close harmony, journeying from hillbilly backwoods to Nashville skylines and back again. Something sublime your way comes.
