When you hear Blackoutfor the first time, you can hear right away why Anna Calvi will be receiving a lot of attention in the coming months. It¹s a dramatic opening salvo, a tune with a tang of old-school mystery and plenty of that cinematic sass which never goes out of fashion.
At a time when everyone is looking for the new Florence Lily La Roux, Calvi is as non-scene as they come. Instead of joining the gang and lovebombing the bloggers with half-chewed tunes, she¹s simply kept her head down and worked to get her music just right. Others may have spent their time making those Sound of 2010 lists; Calvi has spent her time instead making knockout tunes.
Right now, it¹s all about the set-up. Calvi spent most of ¹09 in the record studio (including sessions for her soon-come debut album with Ben Lovett from Mumford and Sons and seasoned engineer Ian Grimble) or on the road (supporting Johnny Flynn and playing the In the Woods festival, amongst other outings). Expect her live theatrical poise and passion to bring many, many people to her side.
