Pianist Danilo Pérez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade are great musicians in their own right, and each has already made his own contribution to jazz.

But together they are best known as three-quarters of the Wayne Shorter quartet, and the guiding spirit of the great saxophonist is evident from the first note of their debut release as a trio. Indeed, the lineage of this joyously liberated music runs right back to the great Miles Davis 1960s quintet of which Shorter was such a vital member.

Like genetic material, the spirit of that band is encoded here in a new generation – not in the melodies or rhythms, which are as fresh as a daisy, but in the intensity of the exchanges, and the daring, childlike innocence of their ambition. mackavenue.com
