Chromeo: White Women

There really should be an ironic emoticon tucked away in that title. Whatever your views on the merits or otherwise of pop with a playful sense of humour, Chromeo's David Macklovitch and Patrick Gemayel have made a good living from merging comic, tongue-in-cheek, louche lyrics and subject matters with funky, infectious grooves. What's quickly apparent (aside from the title's nod to fashion photographer Helmut Newton and the pair's fondness for acting the eejit at every opportunity) is the strong, assured and classic songwriting muscles at work. A track such as Sexy Socialite may at first strike you as Weird Al Yankovic-like, but it takes considerable smarts to combine a brilliant putdown of VIP culture with a high-kicking, catchy pop hook. They do this a few times – Come Alive and Over Your Shoulder also plough these furrows – so it's no fluke. chromeo.net
