ONE DIRECTION
Gotta Be You
Syco**
When this pubescent boyband sneezes, Twitter catches a cold. But have One Direction lost their way? Their debut single, released this summer, was an upbeat and reasonably likeable effort. But this soppy follow-up – a lifeless ballad so bland Westlife wouldn’t touch it with a stick – is an all-out disaster area. #prayforonedirection
PUSCIFER
Conditions of My Parole
Puscifer Entertainment***
“Goddamn judge found me guilty of public intoxication/ Public urination and parole violation” Puscifer is the side-project of Tool and A Perfect Circle man Maynard James Keenan, and this is the title track of his second album. To judge by the video, this man might be the worst caravan guest since Fr Noel Furlong.
ST VINCENT
4AD Session ****
Annie Clark plays four songs from her Strange Mercy album (
Chloe in the Afternoon, Surgeon, Strange Mercyand
Year of the Tiger) in this excellent live session recorded with her band at Brooklyn's Shangri-La Studio.
PRINCE BILLY
New Tibet
Domino****
"As boys we fucked each other/As men we lie and smile." Will Oldham's 16th album, Wolfroy Goes to Town,is one of his darkest, sparsest and strangest in years.
BONNIE GRIMES
Oblivion
Arbutus Records****
Grimes is the alter ego of Claire Boucher, a Montreal- based musician and artist. This track is one of the most hypnotically brilliant electro- pop numbers you'll hear this year. It's taken from her forthcoming album Visions.
COLDPLAY ft RIHANNA
Princess of China
Parlophone**
The third single from Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto album features one of the biggest, dumbest choruses in pop history since John Farnham's You're the Voice in 1986. Oh, and it's got Rihanna on it too. There are dollar symbols bulging in its eyes, but for all that ambition, Princess of Chinais pretty damn forgettable.
