Scala & Kolacny Brothers Wall of Sound***
It didn't take long for Wall of Sound to reissue this 2011 debut album in time for Christmas. After all, it's been a bumper year for Belgian brothers Steven and Stijn Kolacny and their all-girl Scala choir, thanks to their penchant for covers of rock and pop classics and some clever TV and film placements. While there are many who know how to operate this schtick, it's the Belgians' choice of covers that puts them ahead of the pack. Who else would think of doing a mellow, easy-listening, soft- classical version of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters? There are moments when it's all a little hokey and predictable (rather dull U2 and Coldplay covers) but original tracks such as Our Last Fightindicate a willingness to go beyond the obvious.
