The latest heir to Mike Skinner's vacant throne? Michael Stafford (that's Maverick Sabre to you and me) may draw from a similar lyrical well, but his music is infused with a soul sound unheard of on The Streets' records. The 21-year- old was born in London and raised in Wexford, and his debut album will surprise many who customarily dismiss the rap/ soul hybrid genre. There's real flair displayed on terrific lead single Let Me Go, while Sometimesrecollects his Irish childhood and Cold Gamehis life in London. And what about Stafford's fantastic voice? Richly textured, it recalls contemporary artists such as Paolo Nutini and Finley Quaye as well as classic soul crooners. The overlong running time certainly mars momentum, but there's enough to warrant repeat listens, as well as great expectations. mavericksabre. com
