Kavan from Cavan
Nyah***
Reframing the often effete harp as both a melody and rhythm instrument, Cavan debutant Kavan Donohoe has taken a bold step into the great unknown. Choosing a cover of a bland Coldplay hit (
Clocks) as a curtain raiser is either a bold step or a foolhardy one, depending on your frame of reference. Donohoe certainly knows how to get the listener's attention with this quirky opening slingshot. Much more striking is his self-possession as a harpist utterly in control of his instrument. Donohue's solo harp pieces are standouts, his unfurling of
Planxty Wilkinsonin all its genteel glory a particular joy. His decision to toss a piping and low whistle tune into the mix dilutes the impact, with the whistle struggling to find its footing amid unsure phrasing and hesitant production. Still, Kavan from Cavan flags a seriously talented musician exploring many avenues in pursuit of his own musical voice.
