Funky was the State of Affairs Hardly Art***
Those who previously hitched a ride on Andrew Savage and Jason Kelly's wagon will know from their debut album, Unlearn, that the Texas duo are not afraid of taking the scenic route with their tunes. The diverse mix of doo-wop, garage rock, folk-pop and warped rock'n'roll from last time around is still on their second album. The big change is that they've upped the Zappa quota, as they head off to explore concepts (some may call them conspiracy theories) about what technology is doing to our lives and membranes. It makes for an interesting slate of lunacy, the band using new-wave funk, pointy-headed jazzy digs and oddball punk-pop to narrate strange tales and explain urban myths. For all those moments when you feel the pair have lost the plot, there are occasions when they find their mojo and you get a sense of where they're coming from. facebook.com/ fergusandgeronimo
