While their live Rabo de Nube album showed how Charles Lloyd's great quartet with Jason Moran (piano), Reuben Rogers (bass) and Eric Harland (drums) could together push the envelope, with electrifying results, this new CD is a more reflective affair. At times it's no less open: Lift Every Voice and Singand Being and Becoming, with Moran and Harland outstanding, revel in freely handling the material. The pervasive impression, however, is of the profound serenity of Lloyd's gorgeous tenor and rare alto, secure in the unity of one of the greatest bands of his long career. With them he finds lyrical and communal poetry, filled with a personal, recondite sense of spirituality, in beautiful explorations of old favourites
