Take it as the hidden tabloid hack within, but discovering the other half of an admired artist can add to the picture of both. Last year Rod Picott’s steely songs of American blue collar resolve made a big impression, but this collection by his partner Amanda Shires offers a softer, more lyrical view of the world. The Texan singer/violinist’s music tends to sneak up on you. First time around her rounded melodies and imaginative lyrics struggle to make a real impact; nice in a rootsy, folky way, but nothing exceptional. A few listens later and tunes such as Swimmer, She Let Go of Her Kite and When You Need a Train It Never Comes begin to hum with warm familiarity. There’s a quirkiness in Shire’s use of abstract imagery, while her voice invites empathy against
a backdrop of well-judged country-folk. The album is co-produced by Shires, Picott and pianist David Henry.
