Lavery leads the way at Gorry Gallery sale

As one of the few galleries in Ireland currently exhibiting 18th and 19th century Irish art, the Gorry Gallery on Molesworth Street, Dublin, hopes to attract a lot of interest at their sale of 18th, 19th and 20th century Irish paintings. The show opens on Wednesday next and continues until June 10th.

Included in the sale is a fine out- -ofseason South of France scene by Sir John Lavery, entitled Maison Louis XIV, St Jean de Luz, an Irish landscape by Colin Middleton, entitled Dunglow, and a still life by Grace Henry, entitled Cream Roses. There are 72 paintings in all and the Gorry Gallery is open for viewing from 11 a.m.6 p.m., Monday to Saturday.

Italian bronze fountain for up to £9,000

A two-day auction to be held by Mullen's begins tomorrow at 2.30 p.m. with the sale of 170 lots of garden statuary and architectural items in Laurel Park Garden, Woodbrook, Co Dublin. A total of 250 lots of antique furniture and fine art will go under the hammer on Monday at 7 p.m. in their Woodbrook salesroom.

A fine Italian bronze fountain (£7,000£9,000) is one of the most exquisite pieces on offer. Also of interest to specialist buyers may be a Georgian mahogany brass-bound military chest (£1,500£2,000), a set of eight walnut Queen Anne-style dining chairs (£1,000£1,200) and an Edwardian mahogany chest (£1,400£1,800). There are plenty of urns, fountains and pieces of garden sculpture of interest in Sunday's sale. Viewing is from noon to 6 p.m. today and tomorrow.

Art Deco tea and coffee service for £1,200

The contents of a number of north Co Dublin houses will feature in the May auction at Drum's auction rooms in Malahide, Co Dublin, next Thursday from 7 p.m. A mahogany cased long-case clock with a circular white face - William Hillard of Tralee, circa 1860 - (estimate £1,000£1,500), an Art Deco four-piece tea and coffee service (estimate £800-£1,200), a set of Rosewood regency dining chairs (estimate £600£800) and a cast-iron two-seater Victorian garden seat (estimate £800-£1,200) are among the items of interest for sale.

Also, for those whose antique tastes spread to more consumable goods, the cases of Sandeman 77, Croft 82 and Grahan 83 ports may create a stir.

Secretaire bookcases, silver and china in Cork

The contents of three important Cork residences are expected to draw interest to O'Regan's antique and fine art sale in their Lavitt's Quay rooms, Cork city, next Thursday from 10 a.m.

Items of interest include a pair of oval regency mirrors, a selection of Georgian secretaire bookcases and pieces of silver and Belleek china. Viewing is tomorrow from noon to 6 p.m., Monday and Wednesday from 10 a.m.6 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m.9 p.m.

Books with art noveau bindings in North sale

Gerald Deehan of Limavady Auctions in Limavady, Co Derry, expects to draw some interest from the South to his auction next Thursday, starting at 7.30 p.m. A collection of German books with art nouveau bindings (to be sold in approximately 20 lots) should draw antiquarian book lovers.

Meanwhile, two Georgian chest of drawers, a Victorian wardrobe and a magic lantern are other items with some appeal.

Viewing for Irish art sale opens tomorrow

A reminder to those readers who missed last week's column that the James Adam and Bonhams Irish art auction goes ahead on Wednesday at the Adams salesroom, 26 St Stephen's Green, Dublin, from 2.15 p.m.

Following hot on the heels of the two large Irish art auctions in London, this 140-lot sale includes works by Jack Butler Yeats, Paul Henry, Walter Osborne and many other more contemporary Irish artists. Viewing of the paintings begins tomorrow and continues until the day of the sale.
