Entitled Sankofa, after a Ghanaian word that holds broad currency in a number of African nations, this is a show that espouses and celebrates the profundity of its meaning over 90 minutes of energetic ensemble choreography, with interludes of fairly impressionistic scene-setting dialogue and pre-recorded sound. Somewhat in keeping with the nebulous concept behind Riverdance and its various spin-offs, the Ghanaian word short-hands the philosophy that without the past there is no future: "return to the source and then move forward".

With 10 dancers, four musicians and two actors, the stringent discipline of the Celtic dance shows may not be so obviously apparent but the freewheeling exuberance associated with African dance is here in abundance, cleverly tamed and choreographed. Much of the near-capacity audience needed little encouragement to join the ensemble for a boogie at the curtain call - and what greater endorsement of a winning show than that?
