The contents of Ileclash, a two-storey, late Georgian home overlooking the Blackwater River near Fermoy, Co Cork, will be sold by Hamilton Osborne King at the house on Tuesday, May 26th from 10.30 a.m.
The former residence of local publisher, Sean Feehan, Ileclash has been home to many pieces of valuable antique furniture, antique pictures porcelain, maps, books, silver and prints. Mr Feehan has been an avid collector of coastal prints and charts, which would be suitable for the many seafood restaurants dotted along the south coast. Unsurprisingly, as one of the founding family of Ireland's oldest publishing house, Mercier Press, Sean Feehan's contents also include over 20 lots of miscellaneous books.
Together with a few antiquarian books, namely The Gospel According to St John in Irish (£20-£40), The History of Cork by Rev C.B. Gibson and Scenery and Character of Cork (£50-£80), History of Clare, limited edition and History of Longford, limited edition (£30-£50), these surprise lots may draw book lovers to the auction.
A mid 19th century mahogany, rectangular dining table with a moulded rim (£6,000-£8,000) and a mahogany slope-front bookcase, circa 1800 (£2,000-£3,000) are examples of some of the fine furniture on offer.
Some smaller pieces are also expected to attract more specialist collectors. Of these, an exquisite cut teapot, stamped sterling (£1,500 - £2,000) and a plain, tapering coffee pot, London 1752, with a tall domed lid and scroll spout (£3,000-£4,000) are among the more attractive pieces.
Viewing takes place at Ileclash, Fermoy, Co Cork, on Sunday, May 24th from noon to 5 p.m. and the following day from 10 a.m.5 p.m.
