Chicago-based WorldPort Communications has cited Ireland's drive to support technology businesses as a key reason to site a new web-hosting facility in Dublin. It announced plans yesterday to build a 61,000 sq ft European headquarters near Blanchardstown and hopes the $15-$20 million (€16.6E 22.2 million) plant will be running by September. Recruitment has begun and the firm foresees a staff of about 100 by the end of the year.
WorldPort provides web-hosting services for top medium and large businesses, allowing them to outsource their Internet operations in their entirety.
Mr Michael E Heisley, president and chief executive of WorldPort, said the construction of the Irish facility was key to building a strong presence in the European web-hosting market.
Mr David Hickey, manager of WorldPort Europe, said: "World Port has selected Ireland based on the country's skilled workforce, telecommunications infrastructure and national initiative to support technology-oriented business."
The company said the State's multi-billion pound investment in telecoms infrastructure had resulted in one of the most advanced, competitive and reliable telecoms systems in Europe.
Welcoming the arrival of WorldPort, the Minister for Public Enterprise, Ms O'Rourke said: "We are delighted that WorldPort Communications has joined the many leaders in the Internet business who recognise the benefits of locating in Ireland.
"We will work hard to ensure that Ireland remains a competitive option for foreign investment and at the forefront of European digital business."
