Stock prices in New York ended mixed yesterday as blue chips recovered most of a sharp drop after US Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin's resignation, and the broader market rose on strength in technology issues.

At the close on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 25.78 points - or by 0.2 per cent - at 11,000.37, just as President Bill Clinton formally announced Rubin's resignation at a White House news conference.

The Dow opened slightly lower and then plunged as much as 213 points after word of Rubin's resignation crossed news wires about 20 minutes later. The Dow is just shy of its record high close of 11,031.59, reached last Friday.

The blue-chip index languished all day on the Rubin report, but broader stock indicators, which also fell on the Rubin news, climbed back into positive territory.
