Pressure on the Bank of England for large reductions in British interest rates increased yesterday with a call from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) for a 0.50 of a percentage cut to 6.75 per cent to head off the risk of "outright recession". The CBI says confidence among British manufacturers has shown the sharpest fall since 1980, mainly due to marked deterioration in domestic orders.
