Name: Tom Reeves
Position: Commissioner for Electricity Regulation
Background: A former assistant secretary at the Department of Public Enterprise, Mr Reeves comes across as a measured, calm and efficient civil servant, with a warm sense of humour.
Why in the news?
28 per cent of the electricity market is to be opened up to competition from February 19th. Mr Reeves is going to auction capacity the ESB's network next week. After that, he must allocate gas capacity on Bord Gais Eireann's network to companies seeking to set up independent power plants. Meanwhile, details of a trading and settlement system for power must be finalised.
A complex job?
Quite. Between the competing interests of consortiums planning to set up power stations and the logistics of opening the market, Mr Reeves is a busy man. His website, at www.cer.ie/, contains more than 20 discussion and regulatory documents published since he formally took up his position last September.
