Inflation rose in March to 5.4 per cent, up from February's 5.3 per cent. Higher food prices as a result of the foot-and-mouth crisis contributed to the rise, along with significant increases in other areas such as motor fuel, housing and tobacco prices. Motor and house insurance and parking meter charges were also higher.
