THE Dail Committee on Enterprise and Economic Strategy is to be asked to conduct its own inquiry into the affairs of two investment brokers who have left the country.

The committee meets on Wednesday and will be asked to investigate the circumstances around the Taylor Affair and Dublin investment broker, Mr Paul Taaffe.

Fianna Fail spokeswoman on Enterprise & Employment, Ms Mary O'Rourke, said last night the latest controversy, whereby Mr Taaffe was being sued for the return of £141,000 and was out of the country, highlighted the urgent need for a review of legislation and regulation in this area.

Ms O'Rourke said it was becoming more apparent that the Irish Brokers Association should not regulate investment intermediaries. She said perhaps it was time the Central Bank played a more active role in this sector.

Ms O'Rourke said she would be raising these issues at the committee this week. She was concerned that many aspects of the Investment Intermediaries Act had not been implemented.
