BRITISH cruise line Cunard said yesterday its liner Royal Viking Sun has been detained by the Egyptian government pending payment of a $23.5 million (£14.6 million) compensation demand for alleged damage to a Red Sea coral reef.

Cunard said it would be sending independent experts to the reef to assess any damage and determine whether it could have been caused by the Royal Viking Sun when it ran aground in the Strait of Tiran last week with 557 passengers on board.
