UGC is currently preparing a bid for the cable networks owned by NTL Ireland in Dublin, Galway and Waterford, which would give it national coverage for the first time in the Republic.

Yesterday it emerged that rival bidder Veronis, Suhler, Stevenson (VSS) backed by Belgian bank KBC and Merrion Capital had pulled out of the race.

This leaves a three-way competition between bids fronted by UGC, cable entrepreneur John Riordan and the Irish media firm Setanta.
