Data security is a particular problem in large offices or public areas where PCs are often left unattended. Orga (www.orga.co.uk), a British-based company, has developed ChipLock, a smartcard security access system for PCs to help solve this problem.

The ChipLock system consists of a smartcard reader, smartcards and software that allows only card holders to gain access to data and programmes on a PC. Without the card, the mouse and keyboard are locked and the screen is blanked out.
