The euro's success will depend on Europe's economic and monetary policy being sychronised, Fine Gael leader Mr John Bruton said last night. He said he believed monetary policy would be "intelligently decided' by the new European Central Bank, but expressed concerns about Europe's economic policy.

Mr Bruton said the European Commission's powers should be enhanced and it should be elected from, dismissable by and fully accountable to the European Parliament.
