Frankfurt DAX: 5,654.75 (-47.86)German shares suffered a setback as Asian woes continued to hit sentiment in the markets. Dealers said volumes were low after Friday's options expiry and trading was set to remain nervous.

French shares ended lower, mirroring Wall Street moves amid uncertainty and disappointment at the lack of concrete action from Japan at a weekend Group of Seven meeting.

Alstom shares, which floated yesterday at 205 francs per share, were the most active with turnover of 15.6 million shares. The stock finished unchanged at 205 francs.

Italian shares ended lower in thin volume as banking stocks generally fared poorly.

BNL savings shares bucked the trend in banks, however, as they were suspended limit up for most of the session after soaring by more than 10 per cent in pre-opening trade.
