TEXTILE manufacturer Klopman International has announced that 90 jobs will be lost at its Tralee plant in restructuring aimed at improving competitiveness.
A spokesman for Klopman, Mr Joe Barry, said that the redundancies were due to current conditions in the European, workwear markets - and increasing competition from low cost countries.
"The restructuring plan demands optimum utilisation of the modern spinning and weaving technology in the plant to produce high quality products cost effectively," said Mr Barry.
It is understood that the plan requires the curtailment of older weaving looms and other ancillary equipment and this has resulted in the job losses.
Klopman International limited is a member of the Dominion Textile group of Montreal, Quebec, and Canada, and is a leading producer of woven fabrics for workwear and career apparel fabric markets in Europe.
Its Tralee plant, with Ring and Spin Open end spinning and Airjet weaving facilities, is located in the Clash Industrial Estate. The plants commenced started production in 1976. The redundancies will be implemented over the coming months.
