WRU try to allay stadium fears

Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) chairman Glanmor Griffiths yesterday dismissed fears that the 1999 Rugby World Cup will not be held in Wales because Cardiff's Millennium Stadium might not be completed on time. Griffiths insists the construction of the new £120 million state-of-the-art stadium on the site of the famous Arms Park site is on schedule and Wales will host the tournament. The WRU had an injunction served on the media regarding a leaked memo from RWC chairman Leo Williams voicing concerns about the organisation of the tournament lifted by a judge on Tuesday. But Griffiths said Williams' worries about ticketing for the World Cup final and security arrangements for the uncompleted stadium had been addressed. "Leo Williams is satisfied with my response and satisfied all the issues raised in his memo to me are under control," said Griffiths. "Despite what is said or written this project is on time and will be completed by June next year."
