Jimmy White finally gained revenge on Stephen Hendry in Sheffield last night defeating the six times champion 10-4 to reach the second round.

White held his nerve when Hendry briefly threatened a comeback and now meets Welshman Darren Morgan for a place in the quarter finals.

"I've laid a few ghosts to rest tonight," said White after beating the 29-year-old Scot for the first time in 16 matches.

"All sorts of things were going through my mind. You never really know Hendry is beaten until you shake his hand."

White began last night's final session with an overwhelming 8-1 advantage gained in a dazzling exhibition last night.

Hendry once came from 14-8 down to beat White 18-14 in the 1992 final so it was on the cards history might repeat itself.

Instead, White banished the demons from four world final defeats, even though Hendry made him sweat by taking the first three frames of the evening.

Vitally for the 35-year-old Londoner he stopped the rot to win frame 13 and lead 9-4 going into the final interval.

When play resumed White completed his elusive victory 23 minutes later helped by runs of 31 and 23.

It was his first victory in a ranking event over Hendry since the 1991 UK championship and only the second time the Scotsman has lost at the first hurdle at Sheffield.

White's success means so much to him and he did not hide his feelings at the end of a memorable match.

He punched the air several times with his left fist before going over to wrap a consoling arm round his opponent.

"If I play like I did in the first session there's no reason why I can't go on to win the title," insisted White.
