COLOMBIAN star Faustino Asprilla believes Newcastle will go on and win the title following last night's 3-0 win over West Ham at St James' Park.
Asprilla scored one goal and had a hand in the other two as Kevin, Keegan's men turned on the style in front of 36,000 fanatical Geordies.
"With that we can win the title," he said through in interpreter. "We are three points clear and it will give us a bit of peace.
"It was a very hard game, but Newcastle played very well. We got the goal in the first half and the game opened up from them." Questioned whether, with his skilful touches, he played to the crowd, Asprilla said: "No, that's my style of play. I'm just glad we were able to put on a show for the fans." Keegan echoed Asprilla's thoughts on a first title for Tyneside since 1926.
"I still think we are the team in the driving sent," he said. "If we perform like that, and stick our share of chances in, I think we would be, great champions of this country.
But he added: "In the end I was a little disappointed because we didn't go for the jugular. We were passing for the sake of passing, but it's hard to get annoyed." And the Newcastle manager heaped the praise on Asprilla, saying: "He's been exciting from day one but he's got a bit lost in the publicity of the Manchester City game.
Newcastle's Premiership title odds have shortened from 4-6 to 4-9 with bookmakers William Hill following last night's win. Manchester United are 11-4 with Liverpool 11-2.
