TERENURE remain on course to add the Leinster Senior Cup to their Leinster League success, following their 19-9 quarter-final victory over Monkstown at Sydney Parade on Saturday.
Although winger David Lynagh got Terenure off to the perfect start with a try after just two minutes, the visitors failed to convert their first half dominance into scores and went in leading by just 8-3 at half-time.
After Paul Hennebry was forced to retire due to injury, Lynagh took on the kicking duties and landed two penalties to increase their lead to 14-6. Andrew McMaster's third penalty revived hopes of an upset, but Niall Hogan sealed it for Terenure when he stole in from the back of a scrum three minutes from time.
In the other quarter-final played on Saturday, a gritty first half performance put Clontarf on the road to a 31-19 victory over Skerries at Castle Avenue.
Despite playing into a strong breeze Clontarf led 11-9 at halftime thanks to a fine try by Brent Pope and a couple of Mark Woods penalties.
Clontarf were 15 points ahead with 15 minutes to play, but Jimmy Dempsey's fourth penalty and a Mickey McDonough try brought Skerries back into it
