Longford Gaelic football nursery St Mel's College made steady progress on their way to the Leinster Schools' Junior Cup (Section A) semi-final at the expense of Marian College at Templeville Road yesterday. The only player to show an appreciation of what it takes to unlock an opposition's defence was St Mel's out-half Stephen Lynch. A run from near halfway almost direct from the kick-off gave his side a 7-0 lead when he converted his try from under the posts.
Mark Whelan did go over for a Marian try before the break. It was what Marian deserved on the balance of play. They were the tidier unit and were it not for some desperate defence from St Mel's after the break, Marian would have been the ones going on to the semi-final meeting with Mount Temple.
