McClaren signs a new deal

STEVE McCLAREN has signed a 12-month extension to his contract at FC Twente which ties him to the Eredivisie leaders until 2011.

McClaren opted to move to the Netherlands to rebuild his career after a torrid spell in charge of England.

And he has been a resounding success. His side finished second last season to AZ Alkmaar and currently lead the way this term, two points clear of PSV Eindhoven.

Celtic meeting 'prevented potential of player unrest'

CELTIC’S ASSISTANT manager, Mark Venus, believes clear-the-air talks on Saturday have prevented any potential of unrest among the players following public criticism from manager Tony Mowbray. Although the weekend meeting was held at Mowbray’s behest, members of the Parkhead club’s first-team squad used the opportunity to ask why the manager had frequently referred to a lack of “quality” in the ranks when speaking to the media.

Venus yesterday stressed Mowbray has said nothing in public that had not already been aired within the Celtic dressing room. It is understood the manager also told players he had been taken out of context in print.

“It was nice for the players to listen to the manager and for the manager to listen to them,” Venus explained. “In Scotland there are lots of different things published, lots of different things said, lots of different interpretations. Sometimes it is good for everyone to say their interpretation instead of reading an interpretation.”

PFA to negotiate Campbell exit

SOL CAMPBELL has called in players’ union chief Gordon Taylor after allegedly being threatened with a five-year gagging order by former club Notts County.

The League Two club are refusing to release Campbell’s registration so he can sign for another club until an agreement is reached on a “statement of departure”.

The former Tottenham, Arsenal and Portsmouth defender joined big-spending County in August amid a blaze of publicity, but left the club less than a month into a five-year deal.

The 35-year-old former England international is refusing to sign the gagging order as he wants to reveal the truth about his short spell at Meadow Lane and has turned to PFA chief executive Taylor to resolve the situation.

Taylor said: “We are trying to agree a form of words, a statement that both sides are prepared to accept, that will enable Notts County to release Sol .”

King hopes to extend Tottenham deal

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR club captain Ledley King is hoping for talks about a fresh deal at White Hart Lane.

Spurs have an option for a one-year extension to the 29-year-old’s current contract, which runs out at the end of the season, and it looks increasingly likely to be triggered as King has learned to manage his chronic knee condition and has played in six Premier League games so far in the campaign.

When asked if talks will start soon, the centre-back told Sky Sports News: “I hope so. It takes two and it’s not just down to me. It’s not something I’ve thought about too much. The first thing is staying fit and playing games and then when we sit down I’ll have my say.”

Tottenham submit stadium plans

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR have submitted plans for a new 56,250-seat stadium in Haringey, north London, that will see it leave White Hart Lane, its home for 110 years.

The club said if the Northumberland Development Project planning application was approved, “hundreds of millions of pounds” would be invested in the north Tottenham area.

If consent from Haringey Council was gained in early 2010 construction could start later that year, or early in 2011.

The new stadium could be open in its initial capacity for the 2013/14 season, and be fully complete for the start of the following year.

Tottenham’s existing 36,000-seat stadium has remained unchanged for over a decade, while the club has over 70,000 members and a waiting list for season tickets of over 23,000.

Brazil call on Hulk, Eduardo

BRAZIL COACH Dunga has named uncapped duo Hulk and Carlos Eduardo in his squad for next month’s friendly against England in Doha, while Liverpool full-back Fabio Aurelio has been recalled.

Porto striker Hulk and Hoffenheim winger Carlos Eduardo join more established attacking talent like Kaka and Luis Fabiano.

Manchester City’s Robinho has also been included, while Lyon full-back Michel Bastos has been handed his first call-up.

AC Milan duo Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato and Juventus’ Diego have been left out, however.

Brazil take on Fabio Capello’s men on November 14th and Oman three days later.
