Liverpool put five past Singapore
HUNGARIAN striker Krisztian Nemeth scored twice as Liverpool trounced Singapore 5-0 at the National Stadium yesterday.
The touring side took the lead when Andriy Voronin’s effort found the net. Albert Riera extended the advantage before Nemeth struck twice in the final 17 minutes with a Fernando Torres effort wedged in between.
A DISPUTED goal saw Manchester City lose 1-0 by home side Kaizer Chiefs at Pretoria’s Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
Jeffrey Ntuka brought the ball under control with his hand before shooting home the winner from a corner in the 42nd minute of a game in which Emmanuel Adebayor made his City debut after signing from Arsenal.
Crouch price still up for negotiation - Redknapp
TOTTENHAM manager Harry Redknapp is hopeful of completing a deal to bring Portsmouth striker Peter Crouch to White Hart Lane.
Portsmouth manager Paul Hart has suggested a fee has been agreed with Spurs but Redknapp feels there is still negotiating to be done and is not including the 28-year-old in his plans for this week’s trip to Beijing for the Premier League Asia Trophy.
“(Spurs chairman) Daniel (Levy) is talking to (Pompey chief executive) Peter Storrie and the pair are very good negotiators,” said Redknapp. “Portsmouth have a price they want but myself and Daniel have spoken and we have a price we think is fair. Hopefully a compromise will happen and we’ll get something done.”
Redknapp has also said he is trying to sign Real Madrid striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira.
St Francis keep hold of the cup
ST FRANCIS are the women’s FAI Cup champions for a second year in a row after recording a single-goal victory over fellow Dubliner side St Catherine’s in Saturday night’s final at Richmond Park.
The victors had Sharon Cullen to thank for supplying the winning goal on 63 minutes as their normally prolific attackers squandered a series of opportunities earlier in the game to settle the contest.
St Francis now travel to Cyprus tomorrow for their Uefa Champions League group stage games against Rossiyanka of Russia), Israeli side Maccabi Holon and hosts Apollon Limassol already assured of their qualification into next year’s European competition.
ST FRANCIS: Genocky; Nolan (Campbell 82), Corrigan, McEvoy, Dowling; Kearins (Collins 90), Kelly, Cooke, Mulhall; Waldron, Cullen.
ST CATHERINE’S: McKenna; Flood, McLoughlin, Heapes (Sheridan 88), O’Hora; McGrath (Lyons 46), Thorpe, Houghton, Murray; Tyrrell, Slattery.
Ibrahimovic set for Barca move
ZLATAN Ibrahimovic has arrived in Barcelona ahead of his medical scheduled for today.
The Inter Milan striker is on the verge of completing a switch to Camp Nou in a deal which will see Samuel Eto’o move the other way and the Serie A side receive €45million.
“I want to form part of Barca’s history,” the 27-year-old Swedish international said on his arrival in Spain.
Beckenbauer slams Ribery
BAYERN Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has launched a scathing attack on Franck Ribery, claiming he is just using the club to further his own career.
Beckenbauer questioned the Frenchman’s loyalty to Bayern after he was strongly linked with a move away from the Allianz Arena this summer.
Spanish giants Real Madrid pursued the 26-year-old, who has made it clear that he would have preferred to leave this summer.
“Ribery only came here to make a name for himself,” Beckenbauer said. “He doesn’t give a damn about Munich.”
Bayern have resisted the temptation to sell Ribery to Madrid, despite the fear of losing him for a reduced fee next summer due to Fifa article 17 which allows a player under the age of 28 to walk away from a club after three years of his contract. Ribery signed a four-year contract when he arrived in Munich from Marseille two years ago.
Shearer in the dark about job
ALAN Shearer admits he is “in limbo” over his situation at St James’ Park. Newcastle United have still to appoint a permanent manager as uncertainty over the English Championship club’s ownership persists.
Shearer (38), who took over on a short-term basis in April but was unable to spare the club relegation from the top flight, indicated he wanted the job two months ago.
“I know as much as you,” said Shearer last night. “I would dearly love it to be sorted out one way or the other then the club can move forward.
“I am the same as everyone else, I am in limbo. I don’t know what is going on.”
