Leaders Fiorentina drew 0-0 with Bari, champions Juventus lost 3-0 to Bologna and AC Milan were crushed 4-0 by Parma on a dismal afternoon for Italy's top clubs yesterday.
However, Fiorentina's first draw of the season was enough to keep them top of the table.
Juventus had no such luck against against Bologna, finding themselves 3-0 down before the first half-hour was over.
Giuseppe Signori was Juventus' tormentor, supplying the free-kick from which Michele Paramatti headed home in the third minute and then scoring one himself just five minutes later. Davide Fontalan added the third. Inter, without inspirational Brazilian Ronaldo, had to come from
behind to beat Salernitana 2-1 with a goal from Argentinian Javier Zanetti in the fourth minute of injury-time, a result that lifts Inter to seventh.
The other bright note for the San Siro crowd was the news that AC Milan had crashed 4-0 at Parma.
Enrico Chiesa opened the scoring in the 25th minute Argentinian Hernan Crespo made it 2-0 in the 36th minute and then headed in Chiesa's cross in the 60th. French midfielder Alain Boghossian completed the rout with Parma's fourth in the 90th minute.
Parma started the match in fifth place in the table but are now joint second alongside AS Roma who drew 3-3 with Lazio last night in the Rome derby. Elsewhere, Japanese ace Hidetoshi Nakata proved once again how well he has adapted to Serie A, scoring a goal in each half as Perugia beat Piacenza 2-0.
In Spain, Mallorca, who lost 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao through an Ismail Urzaiz goal in yesterday's late game, still retain top spot ahead of Celta Vigo, who drew 2-2 with Valencia, and third-placed Atletico who beat Barcelona 1-0.
