FAI Cup, Second round/ Shamrock Rovers 2 Fanad United 0: Shamrock Rovers deservedly booked their place in the third round as they knocked Ulster Senior League side Fanad United out of the FAI Carlsberg Cup at Dalymount Park yesterday afternoon.

Fanad provided some stubborn resistance for a Rovers side that was without Trevor Molloy and Pat McCourt.

Rovers, 24 times competition winners, were dominating the play but they struggled to turn their territorial dominance into goals. The lively Willo McDonagh wasted a terrific opening when he dribbled his way in from the right flank but his attempted lob cleared the crossbar. Having weathered the opening quarter pressure Fanad went forward and placed their illustrious opponents on the back foot. Gareth Harkin evaded two tackles before shooting narrowly wide of goal.

The scare served as something of a wake-up call for Rovers who open the visitors defence in the 20th minute when Willo McDonagh scored from 10 yards following a scramble at the corner of the Fanad six-yard box. Rovers never looked likely to let their lead slip and scored a second when David Mooney fired home 12 minutes from the end.
