GEORGE GRAHAM last night appointed David O'Leary as his number two at Elland Road - and revealed him as one of those who had encouraged him to take the job of Leeds manager.

Graham said the former Arsenal and Leeds centre half had told him of the potential at Leeds, and now they wanted to work together to realise it. "David told me what a wonderful club Leeds was," Graham told Clubcall, "and if it was successful it would be absolutely massive."

Graham added: "I am sure the majority of the fans will know him (O'Leary). He had a very distinguished playing career with Arsenal and the Republic of Ireland.

"He will hopefully give me the backing and wonderful service I need. I have worked with David for eight years at Arsenal."

The new Leeds manager explained he will be happy to leave O'Leary in charge of the team while he is away scouting for the players he needs to rebuild the club.

"I know if I am away, hopefully looking at players, David can take over. He knows exactly what is expected of him. He will put my ideas across and say what I believe.

"When I asked him he was absolutely delighted and full of enthusiasm and I am delighted to have got him.
