A first-round victory for Sonja McGinn in the women's singles at the European Badminton Championships in Bulgaria took the Irish number one through to meet Sweden's Margit Borg. McGinn scored easy victory over Slovenia's Mateja Slatnar by 11-2, 11-5. But Borg gave her short shrift, winning 11-3, 11-3 .
McGinn had her telling moments, building up occasional attacks against the Scandinavian. But it was a case of chances missed as time and again she pushed her final shot into the net or out of court.
Claire Henderson won easily into the second round, beating Muldavian champion, Marina Buruian 11-3, 11-2. But against Welsh number three seed Kelly Morgan she lost out in just 12 minutes, going down 11-0, 11-1.
