Peter Schmeichel was left in agony when Ian Wright appeared to stamp on his ankle. At the final whistle, Schmeichel raced to confront the striker, who in turn had to be restrained by Arsenal backroom staff and members of the local police force.

David Beckham put United in front during the first half, only for Dennis Bergkamp to level. Then Roy Keane was red-carded. Arsenal were awarded a last-minute penalty, but Schmeichel saved Bergkamp's effort to send the game into extra-time, where Ryan Giggs evaded four Arsenal defenders, then unleashed an unstoppable winner.

A bleak night for all United fans as Arsenal left Old Trafford with the Premiership title in the penultimate game of the season. The home side simply could not afford to lose but the expected full-frontal assault never materialised and United meekly surrendered their championship in front of their own fans. Sylvain Wiltord scored the only goal of the game.
