Peter Schmeichel was left in agony when Ian Wright appeared to stamp on his ankle. At the final whistle, Schmeichel raced to confront the striker, who in turn had to be restrained by Arsenal backroom staff and members of the local police force.

The home side simply could not afford to lose but the expected full-frontal assault never materialised and United meekly surrendered their championship in front of their own fans. Sylvain Wiltord scored the only goal of the game.
