BASKETBALL Round-up: As contenders for the Superleague title begin to crank up their performances, Killester's slide into oblivion continues. It was a disastrous weekend for the north Dublin club as they slumped to successive defeats in Cork, while main rivals St Vincent's came up alongside them in the Northern Conference after an impressive dismissal of Star of the Sea.

Saturday night was the start of the rout as Killester were out-foxed by Neptune (94-73), with coach Jerome Westbrooks' two key players, Damien Morbley and Laurence Young, shut out for long periods. The game was also notable for the beginning of what should be a fruitful relationship between Neptune fans and Mark Green. He shot 33 points on his debut, including four unanswered three-pointers.

Then yesterday the UCC Demons inflicted further misery on the one-time favourites to steal the Tralee Tigers title.

Killester should still make the play-offs but not as straight semi-final qualifiers. That honour looks set to switch to St Vincent's, with Paul Tonkovich and Mike Trimmer combining for 42 points in a 37-point waltz past Star.
