THE initial squad of 24 from the Irish Wheelchair Association for the Paralympics in Atlanta from, August 16th to 25th was announced at a reception in Dublin last evening when the team's appropriately named song "Wheels in Motion" was also launched.
Athletics will have the largest representation with ten in action in track and field events as well as the marathon.
Swimmer David Malone, the youngest member of the squad at 18, will have the his Leaving Certificate on his mind in the next few weeks before turning his attention to Atlanta.
Michael Cunningham will be participating in his seventh Games. He began his career with athletics where he won a javelin gold medal in 1976 but this time he will be participating in table tennis.
"Wheels in Motion" composed by Finbarr Furey and sung by him and the squad will be on sale from Monday with all proceeds going to defray the cost of sending the team to the USA.
