With three wins and a second out of the first four events, reigning champion Donal Griffin leads the Dunlop Hillclimb Championship. Griffin aims to break the 12-year-old record of 40 seconds held by Shaw Lawless for the Curragh hill in the Pine Forest area of the Dublin mountains.

However, the 80-odd starters in tomorrow's event face a bumpier road surface.

Griffin holds the record for the Laragh Hill, near Glendalough, and given good weather the record could well be broken again on Sunday.

Griffin's biggest challenge will come from Karl Cleary in a Metro 6R4, former champion Ronnie Maybin in a two-litre Delta, another previous champion, Jenny Kennedy, in a Crossle 33F and Padraig Forde in the mighty Scott V8 climber.
